Thank you!
Saturday, December 26th, 2009As the year and the decade draw to a close, I just wanted to express my gratitude for all the help I’ve received this year. It’s been tumultuous, the future is uncertain, and depression and fear still reign over the economy.
Despite all that, I’ve been blessed with a great number of friends and supporters, a wonderful number of opportunities, and the love of my family. If you’re going to lose your job and head off into a new career, it’s hard to ask for more.
Thank you.
Now let’s get to work on making 2010 a much better place!
A DECADE already?
Friday, December 18th, 2009
When I was growing up as a child in the 1960s, I thought about the upcoming turn of the century – 2000 seemed so impossibly far away. But here we are, ten years AFTER entering this new millennium, and it’s disappeared so quickly!
Ten years I was employed in Hewlett-Packard, just beginning to discover this new emerging field called coaching. I was managing a team that was embroiled in the whole Y2K issue, worried that all our hard preparation might not have been enough to ward off customer problems on January 1st. As it turns out, things went remarkably well.
You versus the Cubicle
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009Here’s an article I know you’ll enjoy, written by Steve Pavlina:

Given that we can have so much of our work life sucked away by the power of those cubicle walls, why do we give it so much power over us?
Some really thoughtful questions there.
The Big Decision
Friday, October 9th, 2009I hinted that a big decision was in the works for me, which is this: I’m no longer hunting for a job. Instead, I’m now building my coaching business. What surprises me is how much of a difference this makes in my life.
Career Plan B
Sunday, September 27th, 2009I’ve talked about Career Plan B before, but I’d like to be clear about what this concept is. “Plan B” is what you’ll do if your expected career path doesn’t go as you’d like. There’s several ways this might happen:

Managing myself during the job hunt
Friday, August 14th, 2009I’m finding out some fascinating things about managing your mental state during the job hunting process. Here’s just a few:
Breaking through those job-search barriers
Monday, July 27th, 2009I had a chance to give a presentation today to a group called Job Re-Joov. Carol Chenot leads a dynamic group to revitalize their job search efforts, and I was pleased to be able to be a part of it.
“Your job is to find a job”
Friday, July 17th, 2009“Your job now is to find a job.” As a career coach, I’ve talked with my clients many times about the concept. But it’s a much more challenging phrase than I ever knew! The implications are enormous, and that’s what I’ve been spending so much energy on this week.
Building the network
Tuesday, July 14th, 2009Yesterday morning I again went to the weekly meeting of NoCoNet – an organization focused on supporting the needs of job seekers here in northern Colorado. I can’t recommend it highly enough, because it’s an invaluable way to keep you focused on developing skills and pursuing jobs.
Yesterday’s presentation topic was on networking, something I’m not all that comfortable with. So I was grateful to hear the presenter, Derek Filkins, promote the idea that you need to network in a way which is most authentic to your style.
