I had a chance to give a presentation today to a group called Job Re-Joov. Carol Chenot leads a dynamic group to revitalize their job search efforts, and I was pleased to be able to be a part of it.
“Your job now is to find a job.” As a career coach, I’ve talked with my clients many times about the concept. But it’s a much more challenging phrase than I ever knew! The implications are enormous, and that’s what I’ve been spending so much energy on this week.
Yesterday morning I again went to the weekly meeting of NoCoNet – an organization focused on supporting the needs of job seekers here in northern Colorado. I can’t recommend it highly enough, because it’s an invaluable way to keep you focused on developing skills and pursuing jobs.
Yesterday’s presentation topic was on networking, something I’m not all that comfortable with. So I was grateful to hear the presenter, Derek Filkins, promote the idea that you need to network in a way which is most authentic to your style.
Well, this is a big day, at least emotionally. My opportunities to find another job with HP have come to an end and I’ll be formally terminated today.
Oddly enough, I got a call back about a L&D job that I applied for recently. (more…)
My friend Yee Sing reminded me to add another update on how the career-change journey is going. It’s been a strange week – a lot going on, but little going on. Let me explain.
I had a strange occurrence happen this week, and it brought to mind something I’ve pondered for several years: You can never tell where that next job might come from. I don’t mean who the employer might be, I mean how you connect up with it.
Lately I’ve been dealing with the impending big change in my career direction. At first it’s challenging, scary, terrifying, but then that shifts.
When I work with individuals on career coaching, we often have a discussion about networking. Here’s the concept: To expand the possibilities of taking your career where you want it, it’s good to network with people who are working where you want to be in the future. You want to be a manager? Develop relationships with people who are doing that job. You want to move into that other organization over there? Go find out who they are, how they think, and what they need.
But I know that this all seems so random and frustrating. I’m supposed to go hang out with those guys over there, and … do what? (more…)
