Life is about learning. When you stop learning, you’re on the downward path.
But we have this outdated notion of learning: That you spend the first 18-25 years of your life getting educated, and then the rest of your life you merely USE what you learned. Fortunately, most people now recognize that this is entirely unrealistic. And may lead you to some bad decisions.

The “who” questions
As you try to figure out what you want to do when you grow up, there’s thousands of things that you could be investigating. Not only going out and looking at the world around you, but also digging down to your internal needs and motivations.

Relationships in a virtual world
It’s tough to develop solid working relationships with people that you’ve never met. When knowledge-based work is done with co-workers around the world, you can start to become isolated and disconnected.

Non-traditional jobs
This morning I led a short discussion about non-traditional jobs. What is this?
Well, a traditional job is where
- An employer creates a job description
- They open up the job and select the best candidate
- In return for doing the work, the employee receives a predictable (if variable) income

You might have been dreaming about starting your own company. Since I now have some experience with this, and worked with others who have launched out in this direction, I thought it might be good to let you know what I’ve learned.
The logistics of starting a company are fairly straightforward, and there’s lots of help you can get. Do your homework, hook up with seasoned advisors, and you’re set.

Telling your goals to others
At TEDGlobal in July, Derek Sivers talked about whether it’s a good idea to tell others your goals. It’s a short video, worth a few minutes of your time.
But I think he came to the wrong conclusion.

For whatever reason, it seems that expectations and commitments grow without limit. There’s an infinite number of things to work on, to worry about. Not only that, but the things you DO work on sometimes don’t go as planned.
At some point you have to admit that you’re not superhuman.
Here’s the key question to ask yourself: Five years from now, will it matter?
