{"id":938,"date":"2010-10-18T11:48:14","date_gmt":"2010-10-18T18:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=938"},"modified":"2012-06-01T15:04:26","modified_gmt":"2012-06-01T22:04:26","slug":"non-traditional-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/non-traditional-jobs","title":{"rendered":"Non-traditional jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"4\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">\nThis morning I led a short discussion about non-traditional jobs.\u00a0  \t\tWhat is this?<\/p>\n<p>Well, a traditional job is where<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An employer creates a job description<\/li>\n<li>They open up the job and select the best candidate<\/li>\n<li>In return for doing the work, the employee receives a  \t\t\tpredictable (if variable) income<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more-->So a <em>non-traditional<\/em> job would be one which breaks these  \t\tconventions.\u00a0 For instance, many jobs are filled which don&#8217;t  \t\tactually have job descriptions.\u00a0 This is normal in a small  \t\tbusiness, and if you&#8217;re a solo entrepreneur, your job description is  \t\t&#8220;whatever&#8217;s necessary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You can also look at how the job is filled.\u00a0 Now just because  \t\tsomeone is placed into a job without ever having an interview doesn&#8217;t  \t\tmake it a non-traditional job.\u00a0 But what happens when a job  \t\tdescription isn&#8217;t stable enough to go through a hiring process?\u00a0  \t\tThere are environments where tasks are performed by various people, all  \t\tcontributing to the larger goals.\u00a0 Useful work is getting done, but  \t\tit&#8217;s not what you would think of as an identifiable job.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also a lot of jobs and vocations which don&#8217;t provide pay.\u00a0  \t\tSome of these you might call hobbies, or even &#8220;wasting time,&#8221; but often  \t\tthese can provide opportunities to contribute to your career path.<\/p>\n<p>As an example, I worked at my personal development and leadership in  \t\tcoaching for a decade before I was given the opportunity (OK, pushed) to  \t\tlaunch out on my own and gain an income through coaching.\u00a0 But  \t\twhile I was still employed at other jobs, I:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Honed my skills<\/li>\n<li>Became known as a coach<\/li>\n<li>Established some leadership in the area<\/li>\n<li>Developed my network of supporters<\/li>\n<li>Learned how to create a coaching business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a result, when I did finally take the leap last year, I was much  \t\tmore prepared then I was ten years prior.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the big question for you:\u00a0 What kinds of non-traditional  \t\tjobs and career choices might you be ready for?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">\n<h2>An important resource<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been following \t\t<a href=\"http:\/\/sethgodin.typepad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">Seth Godin&#8217;s  \t\tblog<\/a> for some time now, and have run across a lot of others who also  \t\tget a great deal of value out of his short snippets and thoughtful  \t\tobservations about marketing.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s not just about marketing  \t\tyour business, but also yourself.\u00a0 How do you want to be perceived?<\/p>\n<p>Check it out at <a href=\"http:\/\/sethgodin.typepad.com\/\" class=\"broken_link\"> sethgodin.typepad.com<\/a>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">Carl Dierschow is a Certified  \t\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallfish.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Small Fish Business Coach<\/a> and  \t\tauthor of the career management guide, <em>Mondays Stink! 23 Secrets to  \t\tRediscover Delight and Fulfillment in Your Work<\/em>.
