{"id":730,"date":"2010-05-17T13:34:27","date_gmt":"2010-05-17T20:34:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=730"},"modified":"2010-05-17T13:48:16","modified_gmt":"2010-05-17T20:48:16","slug":"twitter-as-a-job-search-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/twitter-as-a-job-search-tool","title":{"rendered":"Twitter as a job search tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I ran across a very nice resource recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onlinecollege.org\/2010\/05\/06\/20-simple-twitter-tips-for-your-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">20 simple Twitter tips for your job search<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know &#8211; you&#8217;re saying that Twitter is such a waste of time and, besides, what would you possible want to tell the universe?\u00a0 Fair enough.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->But Twitter, Facebook, and other tools can be valuable assets.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s why:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You can create and maintain relationships with people using these tools.<\/li>\n<li>You can learn new things, because there&#8217;s <em>different conversations<\/em> going on in these social media.<\/li>\n<li>You can easily find out what&#8217;s being said about your target companies.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/5532404\/what-sites-future-employers-are-checking-when-looking-at-you?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+lifehacker%2Ffull+%28Lifehacker%29\" target=\"_blank\">98% of employers check you out on the web<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I was rather shocked to find out that my kids don&#8217;t particularly pay any attention to e-mail.\u00a0 After running my life almost entirely by e-mail for 20 years, it&#8217;s hard for me to imagine how to get by without it.\u00a0 I guess this is the same experience that my parents had, switching from telephone to e-mail, or their parents, switching from letters to telephone calls.<\/p>\n<p>But why should you care about Twitter specifically?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can monitor conversations going on around any topic.<\/li>\n<li>You can find out what&#8217;s hot &#8211; NOW &#8211; minute by minute (that can be very important if you want to find out about job openings quickly!)<\/li>\n<li>Group &#8220;conversations&#8221; are formed on a somewhat ad-hoc basis and disappear just as rapidly.<\/li>\n<li>People don&#8217;t just stick to work-related issues, to varying degrees they also talk about other aspects of their lives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In my previous job I was monitoring Twitter to do competitive analysis, because it allowed me to see what was being discussed about other companies and my own.\u00a0 For this I used TweetDeck, but there&#8217;s lots of tools out there.\u00a0 I like TweetDeck because it monitors my Twitter friends, my Facebook connections, and other conversations of my choosing.<\/p>\n<p>For job searches it&#8217;s ideal, because you&#8217;ll instantly (OK, within a minute) find out if there&#8217;s news about job openings, target companies, or target industries.\u00a0 Since people have to keep it within 140 characters, it&#8217;s usually quite short and sweet &#8211; but often includes the direct pointer to more information.<\/p>\n<p>Interested?\u00a0 Read the 20 tips above, and then connect with me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/carldier\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">Follow me on Twitter<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/carl.dierschow\" target=\"_blank\">Check out my Facebook page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dierschow\" target=\"_blank\">Connect with me on LinkedIn<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I finally broke down and checked out Second Life last week, but that&#8217;s a whole different opportunity I need to learn about!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I ran across a very nice resource recently, 20 simple Twitter tips for your job search.
