{"id":622,"date":"2010-01-29T12:58:30","date_gmt":"2010-01-29T19:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=622"},"modified":"2010-01-29T13:17:06","modified_gmt":"2010-01-29T20:17:06","slug":"giving-to-get","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/giving-to-get","title":{"rendered":"Giving to get"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/HelpingHand.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-623\" title=\"HelpingHand\" src=\"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/HelpingHand.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>How do you convince people to like you and give you a break?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a core principle of human behavior, so simple:\u00a0 When people receive something they value, they&#8217;re more inclined to give back in return.\u00a0 Pretty obvious, right?\u00a0 But it&#8217;s absolutely true, and is one of the reasons why those charities send you small gifts in the mail.\u00a0 They&#8217;re hoping you&#8217;ll find some value in them, and give back in return.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->But suppose you&#8217;re the one trying to sell something:\u00a0 You have a great idea, you want a job, or you want to have influence over other people.\u00a0 You can use the above principle in several ways:<\/p>\n<p>People need to know what you have to offer.\u00a0 A great way to do this is to show it in action, not just tell people about it.\u00a0 Do you know how to do something interesting or valuable?\u00a0 Show them.\u00a0 Do you have a product you&#8217;re trying to sell?\u00a0 Show it doing something useful and interesting.\u00a0 Trying to sell an idea?\u00a0 Show a mock-up, an analogy, or how the idea has already worked in other situations.<\/p>\n<p>People need a reason to prefer you over the competition.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll be thought of as more valuable if you&#8217;ve already demonstrated an inclination to give value.\u00a0 Are you after a particular job?\u00a0 Look for ways to help the employer solve real problems, whether by volunteering or even what value you give during the interview.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s say you&#8217;re trying to have influence over a decision.\u00a0 If you have demonstrated an ability to understand the bigger picture &#8211; that of the decision-maker &#8211; you&#8217;ll have more credibility.\u00a0 If people in power have seen you exercise skill and expertise, they&#8217;ll be more likely to listen to what you have to say.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the bottom line:\u00a0 Don&#8217;t be stingy with your skill, knowledge, time, and resources.\u00a0 When people see you giving freely, they&#8217;ll be inclined to help you in return.<\/p>\n<p>But remember:\u00a0 What you give has to <em>have value in the recipient&#8217;s eyes<\/em>.\u00a0 Otherwise, it&#8217;s just a useless trinket.<\/p>\n<p><input id=\"gwProxy\" type=\"hidden\" \/> <input id=\"jsProxy\" onclick=\"jsCall();\" type=\"hidden\" \/><\/p>\n<p><input id=\"gwProxy\" type=\"hidden\" \/><input id=\"jsProxy\" onclick=\"jsCall();\" type=\"hidden\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you convince people to like you and give you a break?
