{"id":572,"date":"2009-11-05T09:24:31","date_gmt":"2009-11-05T16:24:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=572"},"modified":"2009-11-05T09:24:31","modified_gmt":"2009-11-05T16:24:31","slug":"what-can-i-learn-from-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/what-can-i-learn-from-this","title":{"rendered":"What can I learn from this?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I enjoy learning new things.\u00a0 In fact, that&#8217;s a major factor in how I spend my time.\u00a0 It impacts all kinds of decisions.<\/p>\n<p>But still, it&#8217;s a struggle.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/i-dont-know-what-i-dont-know\" target=\"_blank\">I talked about this<\/a> a couple of weeks ago, but I thought I&#8217;d expand on a couple of ideas.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The first is that <strong>learning gives you value<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you know more tomorrow than you did yesterday, if you have more skill, then you will be more valuable to others in the future.\u00a0 But I also happen to believe that &#8220;value to others&#8221; is overrated, that many things should be undertaken because they help you progress on your personal journey.\u00a0 Learning is the way you take steps on that journey.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of value in learning seems obvious, and it is, but I see so many ingrained behaviors which ignore it.\u00a0 We value <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">doing<\/span>, and the learning itself can be seen as an impediment to &#8220;getting on with it,&#8221; getting to the point where you can <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">deliver<\/span>.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve even seen cases where our behavior says that it&#8217;s more important to <em>do something poorly<\/em> than to spend the same time <em>learning how to do it right<\/em>.\u00a0 We value expediency over proficiency.<\/p>\n<p>The second idea is that <strong>learning is active<\/strong>.\u00a0 Especially in adults, the rate of learning by &#8220;having the information wash over you&#8221; is much lower than when you&#8217;re engaged with the new content.\u00a0 That might look like active discussion, or problem solving, or trial and error.\u00a0 Gaming is a fantastic example, because it provides a safe environment for testing out what you&#8217;re learning, with very quick feedback.\u00a0 That&#8217;s one of the elements which makes it fun rather than work.<\/p>\n<p>Other learning environments can be fun as well.\u00a0 For me, one of the most remarkable is to have great discussions of exploration with others who are passionate about the same topic I am.\u00a0 They teach me new ways of thinking, while valuing my point of view, and together we make much more progress than any individual could have.<\/p>\n<p>Some of my richest areas of learning have come from those experiences.\u00a0 And fun as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I enjoy learning new things.\u00a0 In fact, that&#8217;s a major factor in how I spend my time.\u00a0 It impacts all kinds of decisions.
