{"id":1698,"date":"2014-10-27T08:07:18","date_gmt":"2014-10-27T15:07:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=1698"},"modified":"2014-10-27T08:07:18","modified_gmt":"2014-10-27T15:07:18","slug":"the-human-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/general\/the-human-journey","title":{"rendered":"The human journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This has been a thoughtful time for our family.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width: 300px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Mario-2001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mario, 2001<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We found out recently that our beloved fuzzball, Mario, has contracted cancer.\u00a0 There&#8217;s not a whole lot to be done at this point &#8211; any interventions will be quite expensive and likely not improve his quality of life very much.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not easy for any of us, because we have to face our own mortality as well.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to sail through life looking at the daily challenges.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not the MOST important thing.<\/p>\n<p>I believe the ultimate purpose is to make a difference in the world, even in the most minute ways.\u00a0 But primarily through relationships and helping our fellow travelers on their journeys.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width: 300px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Mario-2003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mario, 2003<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Somehow, it never feels important enough.\u00a0 But we can see it with our pets.<\/p>\n<p>They never have high expectations.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re able to live in the moment.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re able to appreciate the experience of life itself, and not worry about the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>I strive to keep this healthy perspective in my own life, to be grateful for what I have and to focus on helping others where I can.<\/p>\n<p>I think I&#8217;ll go give Mario a good skritch behind the ears right now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This has been a thoughtful time for our family.
