{"id":1610,"date":"2013-11-25T08:57:37","date_gmt":"2013-11-25T15:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=1610"},"modified":"2013-11-25T08:59:43","modified_gmt":"2013-11-25T15:59:43","slug":"the-dark-cloud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/the-dark-cloud","title":{"rendered":"The dark cloud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1611\" alt=\"Stormcloud\" src=\"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Stormcloud-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Some people have a dark cloud hanging over them, a reputation that continues to drag them down in their career.<\/p>\n<p>I had the chance to coach a lady who had been involved with a failed project some years ago, who felt that the memory of this was holding back her advancement.\u00a0 I also worked with another gentleman who had worked for a boss who didn&#8217;t like him, had given bad performance reviews, and spread rumors my client felt were unfounded.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, stuff like this happens.\u00a0 Life is messy.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->When this happens to you, your &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/sethgodin.typepad.com\/seths_blog\/2010\/01\/quieting-the-lizard-brain.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">lizard brain<\/a>&#8221; takes over.\u00a0 Its primary tool in this case is the fight-or-flight response:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Fight:\u00a0 Start complaining and undermining the people who you think have done you wrong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Flight:\u00a0 Deny the reality, or move to an environment where you can start fresh.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these responses may be valid in some situations.\u00a0 If someone is doing something illegal against you, you have a right to take it to court.\u00a0 And if an environment is truly toxic for you, perhaps escaping that will help you move forward.<\/p>\n<p>But many times, these would be extreme reactions.<\/p>\n<p>In that case, I have three principles I work with people on:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You can&#8217;t control other people, just yourself.\u00a0 The best course of action may be to just ignore or avoid what someone else is doing, and focus on your own actions.<\/li>\n<li>Time changes perceptions, perhaps quicker than you think.\u00a0 As you replace peoples&#8217; memories of past events with positive impressions, the dark cloud will fade away.\u00a0 If someone is causing you trouble, there&#8217;s a good chance that their actions will eventually catch up with them, without any involvement on your part.<\/li>\n<li>The cloud is often more threatening in your mind than in others&#8217;.\u00a0 We all carry around memories of mistakes and embarrassing events from our lifetime, well beyond when others have totally forgotten.\u00a0 After all, they&#8217;re focused on their own baggage.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is where it can be useful to reconnect with the character traits of who you aspire to be.\u00a0 If you want to live a life which is industrious, truthful and loving, then you can start acting that way today.\u00a0 Despite what others have done to you or the mistakes you&#8217;ve made, you always have the choice of which character traits you embody.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some people have a dark cloud hanging over them, a reputation that continues to drag them down in their career.
