{"id":1605,"date":"2013-11-11T11:40:21","date_gmt":"2013-11-11T18:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=1605"},"modified":"2013-11-11T11:40:21","modified_gmt":"2013-11-11T18:40:21","slug":"volunteering-helps-your-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/volunteering-helps-your-career","title":{"rendered":"Volunteering helps your career"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most of us have various organizations we volunteer for.\u00a0 It could be for your kids&#8217; athletic activities, your church, or a local charity.<\/p>\n<p>Usually we think of these in terms of being generous, supportive, and community-minded.\u00a0 Which is fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>But have you given thought to how this can also support your career growth?\u00a0 <!--more-->Here&#8217;s how that can happen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can learn skills which apply to the workplace.\u00a0 For instance, if you lead a team of volunteers, that experience directly applies to the business world.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ll meet new people.\u00a0 We all know that one of the key skills of career advancement is networking, yet most of us struggle to develop those connections.<\/li>\n<li>You might be respected for your contributions.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve found many cases where interesting conversations open up about non-work activities, where people get a deeper sense of who I am and what I might contribute.<\/li>\n<li>You can be more inspired, even at work.\u00a0 When you believe your life is valuable, you&#8217;ll be happier in everything you do.<\/li>\n<li>You may find out key things about your future career.\u00a0 In fact, volunteering my coaching services was a key step to becoming a full-time business coach after I was laid off from my job.<\/li>\n<li>You can get introduced to a new organization.\u00a0 Many times there&#8217;s opportunities to get involved and make contributions in a volunteer capacity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How do you go about finding valuable volunteer activities?\u00a0 Having some clear goals in mind will be a big help.\u00a0 For instance, if you need to get some management experience, then you may be able to gain those skills by managing volunteer projects.<\/p>\n<p>You might be thinking about changing careers entirely.\u00a0 What a great opportunity it might be to work directly with people who are already doing that job!\u00a0 Is there a way to volunteer your time and energy for awhile?\u00a0 My son has done a couple of internships at local breweries for exactly this reason.<\/p>\n<p>Go out there and contribute your time and energy.\u00a0 Do great things in the world.\u00a0 But also think about how your career improves as a result!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most of us have various organizations we volunteer for.\u00a0 It could be for your kids&#8217; athletic activities, your church, or a local charity.
