{"id":1570,"date":"2013-07-08T07:28:53","date_gmt":"2013-07-08T14:28:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=1570"},"modified":"2013-07-08T07:28:53","modified_gmt":"2013-07-08T14:28:53","slug":"expecting-100-from-your-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/expecting-100-from-your-job","title":{"rendered":"Expecting 100% from your job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I read an interesting article this week titled <a href=\"http:\/\/todaysmanager.wordpress.com\/2013\/05\/31\/why-people-become-unhappy\/\" class=\"broken_link\"> Why People Become Unhappy<\/a>.\u00a0 This highlighted an aspect of job dissatisfaction that I&#8217;ve seen many times:\u00a0 The tendency to want 100% job satisfaction all the time.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a recipe for failure.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is this:\u00a0 Any time you put your job satisfaction in the hands of someone else &#8211; even a wonderful boss &#8211; you&#8217;re setting yourself up for disappointment.\u00a0 <!--more-->Not because they are harboring ill will of any kind, but just because they&#8217;re human.\u00a0 Since a job and a company are defined and managed by humans, you&#8217;ll see the same shortfall.<\/p>\n<p>I still fondly remember the best manager, sponsor, and leader that I&#8217;ve ever worked with.\u00a0 She was really something special, and is still regarded as one of the top managers by people who work for her.<\/p>\n<p>But the fact is that she didn&#8217;t give me 100% of what I wanted.\u00a0 And I appreciate that, because she also challenged me to grow in other ways.\u00a0 I&#8217;m a better person because of it.<\/p>\n<p>Should I focus on the shortfall?\u00a0 No!\u00a0 If I do that, I will never have gratitude for what she gave me, and I&#8217;ll be forever dissatisfied &#8211; because there&#8217;s no situation that&#8217;s perfect on all dimensions.<\/p>\n<p>So where do I get what I need to cover the shortfall?\u00a0 From myself.\u00a0 Aha!\u00a0 My job satisfaction (or lack thereof) is largely of my own making!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s similar to how a sustainable marriage is when the two spouses are giving 100% to each other, not 50%.\u00a0 The mathematical &#8220;overage&#8221; is what gives space for recovering from mistakes and the normal ups and downs of life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I read an interesting article this week titled Why People Become Unhappy.\u00a0 This highlighted an aspect of job dissatisfaction that I&#8217;ve seen many times:\u00a0 The tendency to want 100% job <a href=\"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/expecting-100-from-your-job\" class=\"more-link\">[&hellip;]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,42],"tags":[15,56,26,18],"class_list":{"0":"entry","1":"post","2":"publish","3":"author-carl","4":"has-more-link","5":"post-1570","7":"format-standard","8":"category-career","9":"category-newsletter","10":"post_tag-career-coaching","11":"post_tag-inspiration","12":"post_tag-leadership","13":"post_tag-relationships"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1570","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1570"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1570\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1571,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1570\/revisions\/1571"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1570"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1570"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1570"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
