{"id":1561,"date":"2013-06-10T14:03:20","date_gmt":"2013-06-10T21:03:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=1561"},"modified":"2013-06-10T14:06:20","modified_gmt":"2013-06-10T21:06:20","slug":"but-why-are-you-busy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/but-why-are-you-busy","title":{"rendered":"But WHY are you busy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1564\" alt=\"Overwork\" src=\"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Overwork-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>You&#8217;re busy, I get that.\u00a0 Everyone is overloaded, maxed out, too much to do.<\/p>\n<p>Do you realize that all of this is because of decisions you&#8217;re making?\u00a0 No, I&#8217;m not trying to heap guilt on you and say everything&#8217;s your fault.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a little more to it than that.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with a big one: <strong>your job<\/strong>.\u00a0 Sure, your boss is making ever-increasing demands, does things which annoy you, and work&#8217;s gotten a bit boring lately.\u00a0 It&#8217;s feeling like a treadmill.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Here&#8217;s some of the many choices you&#8217;re making:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>YOU get to decide when to declare &#8220;enough!&#8221; to the workload.\u00a0 If you were asked to do 25 hours of work a day, it would be impossible.\u00a0 For me, 18 hours a day is unsustainable, because I can&#8217;t function without sleep.\u00a0 For you, there&#8217;s a limit in there somewhere &#8211; 4, 8, 10 hours &#8230;. you get to decide.<\/li>\n<li>You make your own tradeoffs between the quantity and quality of your work.\u00a0 Sure, at some point you&#8217;ll get fired &#8211; but you&#8217;re still making the decision.<\/li>\n<li>A big one: You decide how much attention to give to distractions.\u00a0 Most of the time I see a great deal of time and effort wasted on ineffective activities.\u00a0 Yes, you need some relief from the stress, but you get to decide how much.<\/li>\n<li>You decide how much effort to put into improving your job &#8211; through changing processes, affecting your coworkers, or &#8220;selling&#8221; your boss on ideas.\u00a0 There&#8217;s constraints and opportunities, but ultimately you choose how to work with those.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A second big area, I&#8217;d hope, is <strong>your family<\/strong>.\u00a0 Here, it&#8217;s more about relationships, lifestyle, and improving the lives of those around you.\u00a0 You get to choose:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What kinds of relationships you&#8217;re working toward;<\/li>\n<li>How that translates into activities; and<\/li>\n<li>Where you spend your disposable income.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A while ago I talked about <a href=\"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/adjusting-your-lifestyle\" target=\"_blank\"> adjusting your lifestyle<\/a>, which is a great way to think through times of career change and managing your stress.\u00a0 Remember, for most of us lifestyle is a choice &#8211; one we have control over.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s another area which is often ignored: <strong>personal development<\/strong>.\u00a0 Not just job skills, but also life improvement and spiritual progress.\u00a0 Do you want to be the same person in 30 years as you are now?\u00a0 Really?<\/p>\n<p>I encourage you to look at your balance of busy-ness, and carefully think through the choices you&#8217;re making.\u00a0 A coach can help give you some structure, of course, but many do this on their own.<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re overloaded and overwhelmed, it&#8217;s time to look at the big picture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You&#8217;re busy, I get that.\u00a0 Everyone is overloaded, maxed out, too much to do.
