{"id":148,"date":"2009-04-24T10:38:46","date_gmt":"2009-04-24T17:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.hp.com\/hpcoach\/2009\/04\/23\/fear-paralysis\/"},"modified":"2009-05-28T18:06:48","modified_gmt":"2009-05-29T01:06:48","slug":"fear-paralysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/fear-paralysis","title":{"rendered":"Fear paralysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had a wonderful discussion with about 75 people in Europe yesterday, talking about career planning.\u00a0 An excellent question was raised about being paralyzed by fear &#8211; fear of job loss being a primary one these days.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->We&#8217;re all human.\u00a0 We have fears, and the general responses are Fight, Flight, or indecision and paralysis.\u00a0 Basically, paralysis means we&#8217;re hoping for\u00a0a difficult\u00a0problem to &#8220;fix itself&#8221; and go away because we don&#8217;t know how to deal with it.\u00a0 Losing your job can require a redesign of your life and all your relationships, and that&#8217;s an extremely scary prospect for most of us.<\/p>\n<p>But there are ways to deal with these deepest fears.\u00a0 The first step is to put a name to the fear, and recognize that\u00a0you have a deeply emotional response to it.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s say that I&#8217;m afraid of losing my job.\u00a0 Fine.\u00a0 It is what it is, and the feelings of anxiety that I have around this are real, they exist, and they&#8217;re mine.\u00a0 They&#8217;re even rational &#8211; I <em>should<\/em> feel anxious about such a big change in my life.<\/p>\n<p>By stating this, I can now move beyond the fear.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most useful tools I&#8217;ve found is the &#8220;Career Plan B.&#8221;\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the key question:\u00a0 <strong>What direction would you take your career if you could no longer do your current job?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many interesting answers you might have for a question like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My first priority would be to relax for six months, because I&#8217;m so incredibly stressed right now and need to get some perspective.<\/li>\n<li>I would explore that other career I always dreamed about.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;d go back to school and work on my next degree.<\/li>\n<li>I would look for a job that&#8217;s quite similar to what I&#8217;m doing right now, because I enjoy it and am quite good at what I do.<\/li>\n<li>I would talk with my spouse about becoming a stay-at-home parent.<\/li>\n<li>I would leverage some of my existing skills but take a significantly different job.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;d climb Mount Kilimanjaro.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now here&#8217;s the interesting part:\u00a0 Just having that answer in your mind helps you to make useful decisions right now, even if you&#8217;re not particularly interested in changing your career.\u00a0 And even more fascinating:\u00a0 It helps to reduce that fear of change which keeps us paralyzed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had a wonderful discussion with about 75 people in Europe yesterday, talking about career planning.\u00a0 An excellent question was raised about being paralyzed by fear &#8211; fear of job <a href=\"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/fear-paralysis\" class=\"more-link\">[&hellip;]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[15,6,17,7,11],"class_list":{"0":"entry","1":"post","2":"publish","3":"author-carl","4":"has-more-link","5":"post-148","7":"format-standard","8":"category-career","9":"post_tag-career-coaching","10":"post_tag-coaching","11":"post_tag-fear","12":"post_tag-job-change","13":"post_tag-plan-b"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/148","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=148"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/148\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":388,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/148\/revisions\/388"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=148"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=148"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=148"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
