{"id":1347,"date":"2012-04-23T08:55:22","date_gmt":"2012-04-23T15:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=1347"},"modified":"2012-04-23T08:55:22","modified_gmt":"2012-04-23T15:55:22","slug":"the-balance-of-optimism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/the-balance-of-optimism","title":{"rendered":"The balance of optimism"},"content":{"rendered":"<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"4\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">I tend to think of myself as an optimistic guy.\u00a0 Despite some internal struggles and down moments, I find that it&#8217;s more fun going through life looking for opportunity more than focusing on pain.But this can get me into trouble sometimes.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As you know, I&#8217;m a small business coach.\u00a0 I have a small and exclusive clientele, which means they take a long time to find and sign up.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not uncommon for my sales cycle to be several months long.\u00a0 More important, most people I talk with don&#8217;t end up purchasing my services.<\/p>\n<p>The result for me, internally, is that I get quite excited when it looks like someone will sign up as a client.\u00a0 Because I&#8217;m optimistic, I like to hope for the best.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t always happen.\u00a0 Which can leave me, well, quite grumpy for awhile.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m trying to learn how to &#8220;hold hope lightly.&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s a balance point of hoping, but not investing emotionally.\u00a0 Of realizing that either outcome is possible, even good.\u00a0 My internal dialog is something like this: &#8220;I&#8217;d love for this person to become a client.\u00a0 But it that doesn&#8217;t happen, that&#8217;s OK too, because my deeper goal is to find the people who will get huge value from my services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This helps to level out the emotional roller-coaster quite a bit.\u00a0 My wife appreciates it too.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to think that the saying about &#8220;not putting all your eggs in one basket&#8221; is a bit similar to this, especially when it comes to focusing your emotions.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, by the way, I did sign a new client last week.\u00a0 So NOW I have a great reason to celebrate!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">Carl Dierschow is a Certified <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallfish.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Small Fish Business Coach<\/a> and author of the career management guide, <em>Mondays Stink! 23 Secrets to Rediscover Delight and Fulfillment in Your Work<\/em>.
