{"id":1189,"date":"2011-06-27T11:27:30","date_gmt":"2011-06-27T18:27:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=1189"},"modified":"2012-06-01T14:49:10","modified_gmt":"2012-06-01T21:49:10","slug":"seize-the-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/seize-the-day","title":{"rendered":"Seize the day!"},"content":{"rendered":"<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"4\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">\n<h2>\u201cLife is what happens to you while you&#8217;re busy making other plans\u201d<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: right;\">&#8211; John Lennon<\/h2>\n<p>I continually run into people who are very future-focused, so much that they can&#8217;t appreciate what it means to live in the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong; goals are wonderful.\u00a0 Having a vision is inspiring and powerful.\u00a0 But if these just sit there on the shelf, they can actually turn UNinspiring after a while.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Joseph has grand plans.\u00a0 He&#8217;s written a 30-year career plan (really!) which ends up with him leading an organization of thousands of employees before he retires.\u00a0 Joseph&#8217;s problem was that this vision was so grand that he didn&#8217;t know how to get started.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t know what he should be doing today, and felt as if his current job was largely pointless.<\/p>\n<p>I worked with him over the course of several coaching sessions, to bring that vision down to some current steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Building experience in managing people<\/li>\n<li>Understanding what it means to manage a business, not just manage a team<\/li>\n<li>Developing some key relationships to help his advancement into management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Without these steps, he&#8217;d still be in that strange gap, doing daily activities that didn&#8217;t seem to advance toward his goal.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d also like to point out that life never goes according to plan.\u00a0 It&#8217;s great to have worked out where you&#8217;d like to be in a year or two, and to be taking steps toward that, but then things happen.\u00a0 Both barriers and opportunities, and some events which seem to be a barrier might be a blessing in disguise.<\/p>\n<p>The way to make decisions in this uncertain and changing environment is to have a set of values, principles, and goals.\u00a0 When your situation changes, go back to the basics and make a new plan.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s your life, so you get to change your plan.\u00a0 In small or large ways.<\/p>\n<p>Carpe Diem!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>P.S. I&#8217;ve seen a t-shirt that said that &#8220;Carpe Diem&#8221; means &#8220;seize the carp&#8221; but I suspect that may not be true.<\/p>\n<p>P.P.S.
