{"id":1170,"date":"2011-05-30T16:52:33","date_gmt":"2011-05-30T23:52:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=1170"},"modified":"2012-06-01T14:50:09","modified_gmt":"2012-06-01T21:50:09","slug":"your-energy-reserves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/your-energy-reserves","title":{"rendered":"Your Energy Reserves"},"content":{"rendered":"<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"4\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">\nI&#8217;ve been going through some significant changes in my personal life  \t\trecently, which have tapped a significant amount of my personal energy.\u00a0  \t\tSevering relationships and saying goodbye to people you love is never  \t\teasy.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s fascinating to me is how this has affected the energy I have for  \t\tmy business.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not an extrovert, so getting out there to build  \t\tmy business is tough.\u00a0 It&#8217;s much easier for me to sit here in my  \t\toffice, and, well, write newsletter articles.\u00a0 <!--more-->It doesn&#8217;t help that  \t\tthis is a long holiday weekend, so I have every excuse to slack off.<\/p>\n<p>What I&#8217;m pointing out, though, is that each person has a finite reserve  \t\tof energy.\u00a0 You build it up by eating, exercising, learning,  \t\tmeditating, thinking creatively, and other activities which bring you  \t\tinspiration.<\/p>\n<p>You tap that reserve by watching TV, being bored, uninspiring work, and  \t\ttackling tough problems.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t matter whether this is in your work, your personal life, your  \t\tspiritual life, or other relationships.\u00a0 There&#8217;s only one heart and  \t\tmind you have, and you only have a limited amount to devote to  \t\tEVERYthing you do.<\/p>\n<p>What we learn from this, then, is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you need more energy in your work, it helps to build up the  \t\t\treserves in your personal life.<\/li>\n<li>If you need more energy in your personal relationships, it helps  \t\t\tto look to your work and spirituality as possible sources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many people don&#8217;t think of work as a source of energy, just a drain.  \t\tBut in fact, it&#8217;s possible to draw from your work and career if you can  \t\tdevelop a sense of direction, purpose, and delivering value.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had a number of cases over the last decade where I wasn&#8217;t  \t\tinspired about my work.\u00a0 So I went outside my job description to  \t\tdevelop my career direction, to create new relationships, and to deliver  \t\tadditional value to my employer.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t need permission from my  \t\tboss to do all that.<\/p>\n<p>Running out of energy?\u00a0 Look to your WHOLE life for the answer!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">Carl Dierschow is a Certified  \t\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallfish.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Small Fish Business Coach<\/a> and  \t\tauthor of the career management guide, <em>Mondays Stink! 23 Secrets to  \t\tRediscover Delight and Fulfillment in Your Work<\/em>.
