{"id":1160,"date":"2011-05-16T08:53:17","date_gmt":"2011-05-16T15:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=1160"},"modified":"2012-06-01T14:50:31","modified_gmt":"2012-06-01T21:50:31","slug":"dependent-vs-independent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/dependent-vs-independent","title":{"rendered":"Dependent vs. Independent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- .style1 { \tfont-size: small; } --><\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"4\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Butterfly.jpg\" alt=\"Butterfly\" width=\"131\" height=\"115\" align=\"right\" \/>I  \t\thad a great conversation with a friend this morning about the difference  \t\tbetween the dependent and independent mindsets.\u00a0 When it comes to  \t\tyour career choices, do you mostly rely on others to make choices for  \t\tyou, or do you mostly rely on yourself?<\/p>\n<p>I can clearly remember when I made the switch.\u00a0 <!--more-->For the first  \t\ttwenty years of my career, I had generally had the philosophy that &#8220;as  \t\tlong as HP continues to give me great opportunities to contribute, I&#8217;ll  \t\tstick around.&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s not bad, except that it meant that I just  \t\twaited for the company to create my jobs and opportunities for  \t\tpromotion.<\/p>\n<p>Late in 1996, I realized that something was seriously broken.\u00a0 I  \t\twoke up at 3am on a Sunday morning, sweating and with heart pounding  \t\tbecause of all the things I was worried about on my job.<\/p>\n<p>3:00am.\u00a0 On a Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>This is when I realized that most of the managers above me were  \t\tdivorced and had a work-life balance that was, to me, unacceptable.\u00a0  \t\tThey were doing great things, fine, but not something I wanted to head  \t\tfor.\u00a0 So I realized that my likely future into the executive ranks  \t\thad come to an end.<\/p>\n<p>This meant that my future could no longer be left to the company.\u00a0  \t\tI had to become an independent, determining my own future.\u00a0  \t\tFortunately, I had six months to determine what that might be, before  \t\tthat job came to an end in July 1997.\u00a0 That&#8217;s when I started this  \t\tcourse into what we now call coaching.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve coached a number of clients who are dealing with making this  \t\tswitch.\u00a0 It&#8217;s disorienting, because you have to challenge many of  \t\tthe assumptions you&#8217;ve made in your life.\u00a0 You have to do a lot of  \t\tintrospection, to answer questions you may never have asked before.<\/p>\n<p>But what emerges from the cocoon is a beautiful new being, powerful  \t\tand with purpose.\u00a0 Independent, and ready to fly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">Carl Dierschow is a Certified  \t\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallfish.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Small Fish Business Coach<\/a> and  \t\tauthor of the career management guide, <em>Mondays Stink! 23 Secrets to  \t\tRediscover Delight and Fulfillment in Your Work<\/em>.
