{"id":1021,"date":"2011-01-10T12:35:23","date_gmt":"2011-01-10T19:35:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/?p=1021"},"modified":"2012-06-01T14:55:55","modified_gmt":"2012-06-01T21:55:55","slug":"the-how-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dierschow.com\/wordpress\/career\/the-how-questions","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;how&#8221; questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"4\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">\nAfter talking about <a href=\"..\/career\/the-whoquestions\" target=\"_blank\"> who<\/a>, <a href=\"..\/career\/the-where-questions\" target=\"_blank\"> where<\/a>, <a href=\"..\/career\/the-what-questions\" target=\"_blank\"> what<\/a>, and <a href=\"..\/career\/the-when-questions\" target=\"_blank\"> when<\/a>, let&#8217;s focus today on the &#8220;how&#8221; questions.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t want to do these before now, because people too often jump to &#8220;how&#8221; before they have clarity on the larger context.<\/p>\n<p><strong><!--more-->How do I translate my goals into concrete actions?<\/strong> Goals are great, and can be very inspiring.\u00a0 But until you can take actions on a daily basis, you&#8217;re not really headed toward the goals.<\/p>\n<p>It can be tough to take large goals and break them into daily actions, because the detail can get overwhelming.\u00a0 So here are some simpler ways to do that:<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can I get started?<\/strong> Take the first few days, weeks, or months, and make progress in the direction you&#8217;d like to head.\u00a0 If you want to get into better physical shape, do something about it TODAY.\u00a0 Then again tomorrow.\u00a0 If you keep it up, you&#8217;ll start building some momentum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can I find the time?<\/strong> This is a tough one for many people who feel overburdened by the demands of work and family life.\u00a0 Adding more to the mix doesn&#8217;t really help.\u00a0 I use two primary techniques to help me achieve my goals:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Take things off my plate, temporarily or permanently.\u00a0 Sometimes I just have to say &#8220;no&#8221; to some things to get the truly important stuff done.<\/li>\n<li>Do things which help build my energy.\u00a0 Many times it&#8217;s not my lack of time, but a lack of inspiration and focus.\u00a0 When I hang out with certain people, or work on my spiritual development, I find that it helps give me the energy to get more stuff done in other parts of my life.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>How do I get the help of others?<\/strong> For some important changes, it can feel quite lonely.\u00a0 Perhaps you don&#8217;t feel you can risk losing face with others, or you think some might undermine your actions.<\/p>\n<p>But often, discussions with others will give you greater clarity and commitment.\u00a0 This is the primary role that my coach plays, and I provide to my own coaching clients.\u00a0 It&#8217;s very powerful to declare your goals to someone else you trust, and have them ask you about it in your next conversation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I know I&#8217;m headed in the right direction?<\/strong> In a business context, you might rely on some key measures of progress.\u00a0 Personally, you can do the same thing.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re hoping to switch careers, put together some milestones which will let you know that you&#8217;re learning, developing relationships, and getting the experience that you&#8217;ll need.\u00a0 Having these smaller measures of progress will help keep you focused, and excited about the progress you&#8217;ll make.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">\n<h2>An important resource<\/h2>\n<p>Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mfPhtWNqDOU\" target=\"_blank\"> this inspirational YouTube video<\/a>.\u00a0 When you&#8217;re feeling like the world is beating you down from what you&#8217;re really meant to achieve in your life, this is a great way to regain a bit of perspective!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\">Carl Dierschow is a Certified <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallfish.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Small Fish Business Coach<\/a> and author of the career management guide, <em>Mondays Stink! 23 Secrets to Rediscover Delight and Fulfillment in Your Work<\/em>.
