Telling your goals to others

At TEDGlobal in July, Derek Sivers talked about whether it’s a good idea to tell others your goals. It’s a short video, worth a few minutes of your time.

But I think he came to the wrong conclusion.

Derek cited recent research which studied subjects who told their goals to researchers. The people who stated their goals worked less hard toward achieving them than others who hadn’t. The researchers concluded:

If you tell someone else your goals, you start imagining taking the concrete steps in your mind.

That gives you an inner sense of achievement, because imagining progress is similar to actual real progress.

As a result, you’re less motivated to make real progress, because you don’t have so much inner dissatisfaction with your current situation.

Assuming that this was a reasonable study, I can follow the logic and might see some validity to it. But there’s a key point that they missed which Derek only alluded to at the end of his talk:

Telling your goal to a researcher is different than telling it to someone you have a relationship with.

Why would this be? Because a researcher essentially provides no mental pressure for you to achieve your goal. If you tell your goal to a friend, it creates a conversation inside your head: “If I don’t follow through with this, my friend is going to ask me about it, I’ll have to admit I didn’t do anything, and they’ll be disappointed in me. That will weaken our friendship and I won’t be as happy.”

It’s that pressure which helps you to work toward your goals, and will help you to sustain it over time. This is the real “trick” behind accountability partners, mastermind groups, and other groups where you talk about your plans and achievements.

So here’s what we’ve learned about setting goals:

Create goals which have deeper meaning for you, ones where you have significant reasons for wanting to achieve them.

Work out a process in your mind for working through the steps, in whatever depth will help you to get started.

Tell your goals to a few people who you care about, and who will offer their support and encouragement. Tell them you’d like to continue the conversation as you make progress.

An important resource

I briefly mentioned TED, so I thought I’d talk about that a little more. TED (“Technology – Entertainment – Design) is a rapidly growing worldwide movement which helps people to learn from each other, exchange concepts across disciplines, and incite entrepreneurial change. The best part is that all their (short!) presentations, by some of the most creative people on the planet, are available for free on the TED website.

You can also subscribe to the videos and audios as podcasts, to download to your MP3 player and consume when you have some free time.

Keep your mind open to new ideas – you never know where your next career inspiration might come from!

Here’s a useful concept that might come in handy at some point: A MasterMind group can help you to achieve your goals through support, ideas, and motivation. So what is it?

The idea was first captured in 1937 in the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. It’s a small group of people meeting regularly to:

Support each other

Challenge each other

Bring new ideas forward to help each other

Being interested in the concept, I decided to form a group last year which would help me move through the transition from being employed, to looking for a job, to creating my company. Four of us meet every 3-4 weeks via telephone for 90 minutes, and each of us talks about the progress we’ve made, the actions we’d like to take, and what support would be helpful from the others. So far, the results are that each of us has valued the support of the group, and achieved important goals. The only cost is our time, as we’re using a teleconference line graciously supplied by one of our members.

Here are the critical factors for a successful group:

Small enough so that you can get to know each other personally, but large enough to have some diversity of thinking – I decided 4-6 people was the right size for us.

Some elements of commonality of background to help quickly form relationships – Our group is formed from people who used to promote coaching at my former employer.

Some elements of diversity so you get richer depth and breadth of ideas – Our group is two men and two women, physically located around the western US, each looking to take different steps in our lives.

Being focused on helping each other get useful results.

Some groups will pay someone who facilitates the conversations and logistics, but given the backgrounds of the four of us we were able to do without. And on the whole, we’ve found this to be quite useful!

If you’re interested in the concept, simply Google “MasterMind Group”; there’s plenty of resources out there. Maybe this will be a valuable asset at an important point in your career where you’re looking for fresh ideas and personal support!
